Psychotherapy FAQ's

Getting Started

How do I know therapy is right for me?

Psychotherapy can be helpful for anyone seeking greater self-understanding, emotional healing, or support through life's challenges. At Sol Psychology, we work best with clients who are curious about themselves, willing to look inward, and interested in practicing new skills and insights outside of sessions.

Therapy is an active, collaborative process. While your therapist provides guidance, support, and expertise, meaningful change often occurs through reflection, practice, and experimentation between sessions.

Some individuals experiencing active suicidal thoughts, severe substance use, eating disorders requiring medical monitoring, or other concerns that require intensive treatment may benefit from a higher level of care, such as intensive outpatient treatment, specialized programs, or more frequent support. If we believe another level of care would better meet your needs, we will discuss appropriate referrals and recommendations with you.

What kinds of concerns do you treat?

Our providers work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families experiencing a variety of concerns, including:

Common concerns we treat:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress

  • Depression and low mood

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Grief and loss

  • Life transitions and adjustment difficulties

  • Relationship and communication concerns

  • Family conflict

  • Parenting challenges

  • Burnout and work-related stress

  • Self-esteem and identity concerns

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Perfectionism and people-pleasing

  • Health-related stress and chronic illness adjustment

  • Mind-body symptoms and nervous system dysregulation

  • Women's issues and life transitions

  • Mindfulness, resilience, and personal growth

  • Autism and neurodiversity concerns

  • Behavioral concerns in children and adolescents

Concerns that require specialized treatment or higher levels of care:

  • Active suicidal intent requiring crisis intervention

  • Recent suicide attempts or significant safety concerns

  • Severe substance use disorders requiring detoxification or rehabilitation services

  • Eating disorders requiring medical monitoring or intensive treatment

  • Acute psychosis or unmanaged mania

  • Conditions requiring inpatient, residential, or intensive outpatient treatment

Do you treat children or families?

Yes! Our providers have years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. We emphasize family unity and open communication with a combination of skill-building that is research-based and our patients find very helpful.

Do you offer trauma-informed or body-based approaches?

Yes. Our providers practice from a trauma-informed perspective and may incorporate mindfulness, nervous system regulation, somatic interventions, ACT, CBT, and other evidence-based approaches. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Do you prescribe medications?

No, psychologists do not prescribe or manage medications. If you are wanting to try behavioral and cognitive approaches to your problems before beginning medications, we can discuss the potential risks and benefits of that. If your symptoms are particularly severe, we may require you to start medication before we work together so that you may benefit from therapy.

Finding the right therapist

How do I get matched with a therapist?

Dr. Rhoads personally reviews each inquiry and offers a free 15-minute consultation to learn about your needs and preferences. She then recommends the provider who may be the best fit based on clinical concerns, therapeutic approach, scheduling needs, and in-person or telehealth availability.

I see some providers are "psychological associates", what does that mean?

Psychological Associates are doctoral-level clinicians who are completing the final supervised experience required for psychologist licensure in California. They work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist and participate in ongoing consultation and professional development. At Sol Psychology, we view supervision as a collaborative process that supports both clinician growth and high-quality client care.

What if my therapist isn't the right fit?

The therapeutic relationship is an important part of the healing process. If your provider does not feel like the right fit, we encourage you to discuss your concerns openly. Dr. Rhoads can help determine whether another provider within the practice may better meet your needs. If a better fit exists outside of Sol Psychology, we are also happy to provide referrals to trusted clinicians and community providers.

Beginning therapy

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know you, understand your concerns, and begin developing a treatment plan that aligns with your goals. We will discuss your history, current symptoms, strengths, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Whenever possible, we also aim to provide at least one practical tool, insight, or coping strategy that you can begin using right away.

How often will we meet?

Most clients begin with weekly sessions, as consistency is often the best way to build new skills, gain insight, and create lasting change. Similar to building strength at the gym, therapy tends to be most effective when practiced regularly.

Your treatment plan is an ongoing conversation between you and your therapist. As your needs evolve, we may recommend meeting less frequently, participating in groups, exploring body-based interventions, or incorporating specialized services such as hypnotherapy.

Will psychotherapy make me more sad, anxious, or stressed?

While psychotherapy is meant to help you take control of your life and feel better over time, it does come with certain risks. I will be asking you to take a look at your behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and (possibly painful) past so that we can identify origins of your struggles and heal your deep-seated wounds. This may be uncomfortable, and even difficult, but we would be in constant communication during session to be sure we are not causing you harm.

How long are psychotherapy sessions?
  • Individual psychotherapy: 50 minutes

  • Group therapy and workshops: 90 minutes

  • Hypnotherapy with Dr. Rhoads: approximately 100 minutes

Your provider will discuss the most appropriate treatment format and schedule based on your goals and needs.

In-Person & Virtual Care

Do you do in-office visits?

All practitioners at Sol Psychology have in-person availability at our Gold River location. We all do Telehealth as well! Be sure to specify your preferences during your initial call with Dr. Rhoads.

Which is more effective, teleahealth or in-office?

Research has shown that telehealth and in-office therapy are equally effective for many concerns. The best option often depends on your preferences, comfort level, and practical needs.

In some situations, your therapist may recommend in-person sessions based on clinical needs or treatment goals. Otherwise, you and your provider can decide together which format best supports your care.

Fees & Insurance

Do you take insurance?

Yes! Sol Psychology is in the process of getting credentialed with Aetna and Medi-Cal and we are currently taking Medicare patients. If you are looking for out-of-network coverage, your provider will be happy to provide you with a monthly super bill you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

What are your fees?
  • Psychological Associates: $150 per 50-minute session

  • Dr. Rhoads: $205 per 50-minute session

  • Group therapy and workshops: $95 per participant

Fees for specialized services, such as hypnotherapy, may vary. For additional information, please visit our Fees & Insurance Page →

Can I use my out-of-network benefits?

Yes. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits that may reimburse a portion of your therapy costs. Upon request, we can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

We recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask about your specific out-of-network mental health benefits.

What is your cancellation policy?

We kindly ask for at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling requests. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be subject to the full session fee.

We understand that life happens, so each client is provided one waived late cancellation or missed appointment per calendar year.

Specialized Services

Do you offer hypnotherapy?

Yes. Dr. Rhoads offers Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy for select clients when clinically appropriate. Hypnotherapy may be recommended for concerns that have been resistant to traditional approaches or for individuals seeking deeper experiential work alongside psychotherapy.

Not all clients require hypnotherapy, and recommendations are made collaboratively based on your treatment goals and needs.

Can I combine psychotherapy and hypnotherapy?

Yes. Dr. Rhoads typically provides hypnotherapy in conjunction with ongoing psychotherapy, as integration and follow-up are important parts of the process. In select cases, hypnotherapy may be provided alongside treatment with an outside therapist with ongoing consultation and coordination of care.

Steady Mind. Open Heart. Lasting Change.

We believe healing happens through connection, insight, and compassionate care.
